Released in 1999, this adventure packed sci-fi film brings us the thrilling story of an average computer hacker, Neo (Keanu Reeves), who realizes that the life he has been living is a dream. After knowing the truth about how artificial intelligence has taken over the world that he once knew, he joins the resistance lead by Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) in his fight against the sentinels.

In an era where the idea and distribution of virtual reality was not as common as we see today, ‘The Matrix’ struck the minds of its audience by introducing a concept they had not witnessed before. Despite being a difficult idea to grasp, the movie took the world by storm, hitting up to 463 million dollars in the box office. A mixture of philosophy, religion, and exceptional special effects, the directors have been successful in their goal of keeping their viewers glued to their screens, filling them with a range of emotions.

The film centres mostly on Neo, a computer hacker working in a renowned software company who comes to know that the world as he knows it is a virtual lie and that humans are, in reality, used as a source of batteries, powering up AI sentinels. Reeves, although not having an equal share of lines in the film, lives up to his acting reputation by doing justice to his character. With a little assistance from the graphical effects, and through his facial expressions and postures, he portrays his body language and stunts in the most immaculate manner.

One of the major reasons why ‘The Matrix’ is known to be one of the most popular action films of all time is because of the graphics and the story line which became the basis of future sci-fi films to come. Amongst all the other scenes, the most epic one is considered to be the slow-motion bullet-stop by Neo, which turned out to have a revolutionary effect on both the audience and the future films that were to follow. Effects wise, the film has undoubtedly done a remarkable job, making it more than worthy of the Oscar Award it received for best effects in the year 2000. In terms of the story it features, ‘The Matrix’ is considered to be the pioneer of future sci-fi films related to this particular innovation acquired by the film. The concept of Artificial Intelligence and its assumed consequences was a niche in sci-fi films which were later on applied to countless films and TV series that were to come.

Whether we consider ‘The Matrix’ as an exaggerated unimaginable chaotic story or a film full of excitement, there is no denying the effect it had on cinema with its cinematic effects and camerawork. All in all, the film is of the type which encompasses time, making it watch-worthy even to this day.
