When it came to surprise hits, the Nintendo Switch really pulled it out of the bag. Not only did the console manage to exceed expectations, but it released alongside it The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, a game that is considered by many to be close to a masterpiece. In comparison to The Legend of Zelda franchise, Breath of the Wild was a breath of fresh air on a beloved franchise and seemed to be the exact sort of risk Nintendo should be taking going forward.

The story for the game is told in slow, revealing increments, as you play as the usual hero, Link. Instead of growing up to be the hero of the land, this time around he’s forgotten everything and awakes inside a strange, futuristic chamber. After waking, it’s revealed that he’s been resting for the past 100 years and the land he sought to protect from Calamity Ganon is no longer what it once was. He’s even forgotten his role as a knight of the royal family, to protect Zelda at all costs. How the game tells you the story of Link, Zelda, and the land of Hyrule is beautifully told through exploration, quests, and intriguing characters.

In terms of combat, Breath of the Wild uses a rather simple take on the hack and slash formula, where hitting the same button will give you a simple combo. Even though the attacks are simple, there are many different attacks and pieces of equipment for Link to learn and equip, making him a stronger and more formidable combatant with every discovery. Combat isn’t all the game has on offer, however, as a big part of the game is exploration, which is made considerably easier with the hand glider. At any point in the game you can leap from a high surface and start gliding, making traversal in this game so much more enjoyable. No matter how much time is spent in this game, exploration is just a part of it that doesn’t get boring.

A big part of this game is the visual style and it’s a style that truly shows off the Nintendo Switch’ power in such a small package. Every part of this game is ladled with bright and vibrant colours, all of which have something similar to a cell-shading look to make the colours just that little bit richer. The visual style the game has going for it makes it a beautiful game to look at, either on the TV or on the handheld itself.

Overall, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is considered a masterpiece by many people, and it’s easy to understand why. First of all, the game looks absolutely stunning; secondly, the gameplay is great and doesn’t get stale, even towards the end; and thirdly, the story keeps you engaged and doesn’t let you go. Breath of the Wild is the sort of game we don’t get many of, so it should come as no surprise at how easy this game is to recommend for anyone with a Switch.
